Fly Fishing Guide on the French Riviera – Meet Guillaume Mary
I was born on the Basque Coast, where water shapes both landscapes and lives. From an early age, rivers, the ocean, and wild places became my playground and my refuge. That quiet fascination with water never left me — it simply evolved.
Today, I am a professional fishing guide on the French Riviera, sharing more than twenty-five years of experience on rivers across France and around the world. What truly brings me happiness is simple: being by the water, where time slows down and nature takes the lead.
Before dedicating myself fully to fly fishing, I worked for many years as a rafting and kayaking guide on wild, technical rivers. In 2012, I founded my own outdoor guiding company – Raft’Ubaye – on the Ubaye River, one of the most iconic rafting destinations in France. This background gives me a deep understanding of rivers, safety, and movement on the water — essential elements for guided fly fishing experiences.
In 2015, a turning point led me back to fishing in a more intimate way. A few years later, Fly fishing quickly became an obvious choice. More than a technique, it revealed a contemplative approach to rivers: reading the water, understanding fish behaviour, and being fully present in the moment.
Today, I guide fly fishing trips in the French Riviera and Provence, focusing on wild rivers, clear waters, and authentic experiences away from crowded spots. My approach combines technical instruction, exploration of remote locations, and a deep respect for the natural environment.
In 2023, I completed professional training as a certified fishing instructor and guide, allowing me to offer safe, structured, and personalised fly fishing guiding for beginners and experienced anglers alike.
Esprit Rivières is the expression of a lifelong relationship with rivers — crystal-clear waters, wild fish, and meaningful moments shared on the riverbank. Whether we approach the river by foot, canoe, or simply stand still in the current, fly fishing becomes a way to connect with place, nature, and oneself.
I look forward to welcoming you for a fly fishing experience on the French Riviera, and to sharing a special moment by the water.

I had a brilliant day with Guillaume fishing the River Loup. Conditions were difficult with warm weather and very clear water but we managed 7 very nice fish. Guillaume is a fantastic, knowledgeable and entertaining guide. We mixed between Euro nymphing and dry fly fishing in some beautiful parts of the river. I thoroughly recommend a day on the river with Guillaume.

Hi Cameron, Thank you very much for your kind words. It was a real pleasure to spend the day with you on the River Loup and to share some of my favorite water close to the French Riviera. The conditions were definitely challenging with the warm temperatures and crystal-clear water, but your fishing skills and willingness to learn new techniques made for a very successful day. I particularly enjoyed introducing you to Euro nymphing and seeing how quickly you adapted to it. Thank you also for highlighting the beauty of the river and its surroundings. For me, fly fishing is not only about catching fish but also about experiencing these wild and peaceful places. I really enjoyed our day together and our conversations by the river. I hope our paths cross again one day for another fishing adventure in the Southern French Alps. On a 2 week adventure through Provence, I needed a day of fishing. Driving through alpilles and seeing many gorgeous rivers will do that. It didn’t help that while visiting Ille Sur le Sorgue that there was a small mayfly hatching and trout were feeding in the center of town. I was surprised to find that there was actually trout fishing in Provence. Since we were finishing our adventure in Nice, I looked for something in that area at the end of our trip. I found Gui on the internet. We found the little town of Saint Martin Vesubie and used that as a base for 2 days. It had a distinctly different feel from western Provence. It is very alpine feeling and only an hour and 15 minutes from Nice. Gui has access to several rivers in that area. While probably not a specific trout destination unless you’re really a Francophile, it is an excellent day trip from Nice or an add on day in a tour through southern France. As a fishing guide in the US I appreciate spending a day with a knowledgeable guide. In a new area a guide will know the area and techniques and I recommend finding a good one. We fished a small mountain stream that was pocket water in an incredibly beautiful valley. We never saw another angler. I fished a caddis dry all day. We fished 13 ft leaders in clear pockets. We had action all day. This is not a large fish destination, but trout fishing isn’t always about the biggest or the most. Gui was very knowledgeable and a delight to spend the day with. He provided all the gear and had the flies that worked. I will fish with him again on my next trip. Our trip would also be compatible for a wife or girlfriend to join in fishing or simply to enjoy the setting.

Dear Michael, Thank you very much for taking the time to write such a detailed review. It was a real pleasure to spend the day on the river with a fellow fishing guide and passionate angler. I especially enjoyed sharing not only the fishing, but also our conversations about rivers, guiding and fly fishing from different parts of the world like Patagonia y el Famoso Rafa... I am glad you enjoyed this small corner of the Southern French Alps. As you mentioned, our wild mountain trout are not known for their size, but rather for the beauty of the rivers they inhabit, the technical nature of the fishing, and the incredible scenery surrounding them. Thank you as well for highlighting the accessibility of these rivers from Nice and the unique character of the Vésubie Valley. It is always rewarding to see visitors discover that only a short distance from the Mediterranean coast lies a completely different alpine world. I truly appreciate your kind words and your trust. I look forward to sharing another river with you on your next trip to France. I was introduced to Guillaume by another guide whom at the time was overseas and due to my late notice was unable to assist me in trying to get into the French back country for a few days fly fishing. It was not even two weeks out from memory, but he connected me to Guillaume who was a friend of his and whilst he was for the most part operating a raft business at the time reassured me that he was an excellent fly fisherman. We connected over the phone (and have continued to talk ever since) in the lead up to my trip often in the middle of the night (I was calling from Sydney), and we hit it off instantly. We spent 4 or 5 nights one of which was at Guillaume’s white water rafting business on the river in the Ubaye valley and from there backpacked into more remote locations sleeping just on mats under the stars. Guillaume was an incredible wealth of knowledge both for flyfishing and the local area and we made a good team despite the language barrier. His English is very strong. Coming from Sydney I had only fly fished once whilst away in Tasmania. Predominantly we are game fishing for the likes of marlin and tuna or otherwise kingfish and snapper. Something about the finesse and purity of fly fishing however amidst incredible mountain backdrops across those couple of days however really did redefine and defied what fishing meant to me and just how much fun you could have in a stripped back more simple setting. It didn't matter the size of the trout or quantity, the whole experience I still just cannot put into words. Though we caught a lot… If you are reading this considering whether Guillaume is the right choice for you or considering whether you want to give fly fishing a shot... just do it. If you are reading this considering if the location is right… just do it. You will have no regrets. I gave it a shot and created some of my most cherished memories amidst some of the most jaw dropping scenery I have been privileged to witness, and I gained a great friend. I have included some photos but wanted to note we were largely off our phones and this really is just a snippet of what you will experience. Best, Charlie Sydney Australia

Charlie, thank you so much for this incredible message… it truly means a lot. What you describe is exactly what I try to share through fly fishing in these mountains: not only technique or fish, but a deeper connection to nature, simplicity, and the experience itself. You came with a completely different fishing background, and it was amazing to see how quickly you embraced the spirit of it — adapting, exploring, and fully living each moment out there. I’m really glad that this trip left such strong memories for you. For me as well, it was a great human encounter and a real pleasure to share this adventure together. You’re always welcome back here — there are still many rivers to explore. Last summer, Guillaume took me on a solo guided fly fishing day starting in the valley near Maljasset, in the Ubaye Valley, a truly stunning setting in the French Alps. We set out early on a cold morning, which made the fish less active, but it didn’t matter one bit. The experience was still incredible from start to finish. Guillaume is a highly skilled and knowledgeable guide who adapts perfectly to both conditions and client, and above all he's super friendly! He also kindly provided gear I didn’t have, and his English was very helpful when my French wasn’t enough. A brilliant day in nature where you feel completely immersed in the surroundings. Highly recommended!

Thank you very much for your kind words Joachim, I really appreciate it. That day in the upper Ubaye Valley was indeed a special one — even with the cold morning and quiet fish, the atmosphere up there always makes the experience unique. I’m glad you enjoyed the day, both on and off the water. Fly fishing in these alpine rivers is not only about catching fish, but also about understanding the environment and taking the time to enjoy it. It was a real pleasure to share this moment with you... You’re very welcome back anytime to explore more rivers in the French Alps.
