Off-Season Fly Fishing Guiding
Learn the fundamentals of fly fishing in one full day
For many fly anglers, the closed season is a time to tie new flies, experiment, seek inspiration — and above all, to dream about the long-awaited opening day.
Yet winter can also be a perfect opportunity to learn.
In the Southern Alps, blessed with over 300 days of sunshine per year, conditions are ideal for discovering fly fishing — even in winter.
For beginners, this is the perfect moment to build solid foundations and be fully prepared when opening day arrives.
Learning to Cast: The Key to a Good Start
Fly casting is often the biggest challenge for beginners.
However, when explained clearly — first in theory, then in practice — it can be learned surprisingly quickly.
With just 30 minutes of practice, two to three times per week (on a pond, in an open field or even in your garden) over the course of a month, you will be ready to start the season with confidence.
Knots, Terminology and Rigging: Simplifying the Essentials
Technical jargon and the many different knots can feel overwhelming at first.
But with just three essential knots and a clear explanation of the basics, everything quickly becomes much easier to understand.
As for fly tying — often seen as elitist — it becomes accessible as soon as the fundamentals are explained. From there, the countless tutorials available online will allow you to progress independently.
A Full Day to Learn and Practise
I offer a one-day training course for one or two participants, structured in two parts:
Morning
Outdoor fly casting practice
Afternoon
Indoor workshop at the “Sam Sufy” cabin, in a warm and relaxed atmosphere by the fire, to discover:
essential fly fishing terminology (rod action, fly lines, leaders, tippet, etc.),
indispensable knots (surgeon’s knot, barrel knot, grinner),
tying your first fly (CDC or pheasant tail).
Rates
€150 for one participant
